Annual Show 2007

Annual ShowAnnual ShowAnnual Show

The 14th Annual Show was held at The Crescent Community Centre on Saturday 28 July 2007. It was one of the best ever with regard to the number and quality of plants on show and contributions from experienced growers. There were 217 plants on the show bench with 19 geraniums entered in the new fun class. We hope to build on this success next year. We were fortunate to have a number of nationally recognised exhibitors taking part, but not taking all the prizes!

Chris Woolston, a national champion with a record 39 times ‘’Best in Show’’ in all the major competitions and a member of our society attended and exhibited, as did Malcolm Beerman from Leicester, the East Midlands representative of the British Fuchsia Society. Ray Hill, from Oakham, came with some excellent plants, some of which he exhibited and others he sold on our plant stall. The plant stall is noted for the quality of its merchandise and is a very popular attraction for the general public. Finally we had Mick Conroy from Wellingborough, who showed some stunning three and a half-inch pot cultivars, deservedly winning our ‘Best in Show’ and many other prizes. Other members of the society achieved some pleasing results and managed to beat the ‘professionals’ in some of the classes. The most rewarding being a newcomer to the society and first time exhibitor who achieved a place in the society plant class.

We were delighted that the Mayor of Kettering paid us a visit and spent some considerable time enjoying our show and hospitality. It was a good day out for all with a varied and colourful display of fuchsias, tombola, plant sales, refreshments, cake stall and raffle for a hamper keeping the momentum going.

Our thanks go to a hard working team under show secretary Jenny and to our sponsors, without whom the society would find it hard to continue. A final big thank you to Nick Warliker, one time head gardener to royalty, expert on matters horticultural, broadcaster and newspaper columnist and to Doreen Riley and Jean Wigmore, flower arrangers extraordinaire, who so ably judged the exhibits.
